How Biden’s $7.5 Billion EV Charging Plan Is Impacting Americans

More EV chargers are coming but Americans will need to have patience.

Over the next five years, the Biden administration is working to blanket the country in EV chargers. The $1.2 trillion infrastructure bill allots $7.5 billion for EV chargers as demand for electric vehicles continues to climb across the country.

However, the President’s plan requires a lot of patience from consumers and the EV industry.

Patience Is Necessary

It is going to take a few years to roll the EV chargers out. Most will also be Level 2 EV chargers which take about an hour to give you 25 miles of battery capacity. EV drivers will find they are doing most of their charging at home or work. Here they can plug in and leave their vehicles for hours. Restaurants, shops, movie theaters, and other facilities where drivers spend a lot of time will also become popular long-term charging places.

Gas stations will be places where drivers top off their EV batteries.

According to some studies, it’s how drivers already handle EV charging. Most industry experts do not see the roll-out of primarily Level 2 EV chargers as harming the growing EV industry. Others worry that the growing number of slower EV chargers may become a reason drivers are reluctant to switch away from gas-powered vehicles.

The infrastructure bill does include funding for fast DC charging stations, along with hydrogen fueling ones, but the majority will be Level 2 chargers.

There is a lot to learn about EV chargers and the market is charging at a very fast pace, even on a day-to-day basis. Why Level 2 EV Chargers?

The focus on Level 2 EV chargers is serving several purposes. It is helping to make the technology universal, which makes it easier for drivers to pull up and plug in. The Biden administration also hopes it will reduce competition for an open charging station.

By building out a large number of Level 2 chargers, drivers will have an easier time finding one on their route.

The infrastructure bill does use broad language concerning EV charging, but it does focus on public accessibility. EV chargers using funding from the infrastructure bill can also be installed on private property, but only if they are open to the public for a specific amount of time per week.

EV charger owners and operators can also work with local governments to create long-term maintenance plans that prevent the stations from being abandoned.

Summing Up The EV Charging Plan

The infrastructure bill, now law, may not be as ambitious as President Biden initially wanted, but it is still a crucial step toward a more sustainable future.

It’s impossible to know what the EV charging landscape will look like until the roll-out is complete. It is slated to take around five years, but EV drivers are already looking for changes that include slower but cheaper Level 2 chargers.

The chargers may be slower than fast DC chargers, but they will give drivers more peace of mind when they hit the road.
