Understanding Particle Matter and the Importance of Dose Reduction
The term “aerosol” refers to the suspension of particles, either liquid or solid, in the air. Aerosolized particle matter can impact your health.
Defined by size, particle matter (PM) that is smaller is more likely to affect your health. Measured in microns, particle matter with a diameter of 0.1 to 2.5 microns in diameter are considered health risks. Known as PM 2.5, particle matter 2.5 microns or less are more easily inhaled. When this occurs, it draws these aerosolized PM 2.5 atoms deep into our lungs. This can lead to the development of disease or illnesses, as well as the exacerbation of already existing medical conditions. According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), this is considered one of the key factors in the rampant spread of SARS-CoV-2, also known as COVID-19 or the coronavirus. PM 2.5 is also known to lead to higher mortality rates in general, leading to roughly 7 million premature deaths annually.
We recently wrote an article that reviewed the findings from a 2015 study that focused on the link between air pollution and the global burden of disease. The study found that ambient exposure to particle matter at or below 2.5-microns (PM 2.5) was directly related to 4.2 million deaths. Mitigating PM 2.5-related Mortality Rates through Dose Reduction
The impacts of PM 2.5 exposure are undeniable and needs to be addressed as we move forward in this post-COVID-19 world. As vaccines for this unprecedented illness become more widely available, the world will not forget how rapidly one illness spread from person to person. In other words, the mitigation plans put in place to address COVID-19 should be looked at as long-term solutions to help prevent the spread of diseases and illnesses in the future as well.
Ceiling mounted HEPA filters have undergone independent particle testing. In doing so, it has been proven that these units are able to reduce up to 74% of aerosolized PM 2.5 dosage. Not only does this reduce the immediate threat of COVID-19, but it also improves the overall indoor air quality and provides a long-term solution to airborne illnesses.
Dose Reduction Case Study
The Halo-P is one of the HEPA industry’s premier filter systems. Case studies provide clear evidence of the effectiveness of the Halo-P ceiling mounted HEPA unit.
In one such case study, particle levels were monitored while talking in a 261 square foot office space for 50 minutes. After establishing this baseline dose, the test was repeated with the addition of the Halo-P operating within the same space. The result was a dose reduction of 62% to 74% based on the particle matter size.
It should be noted that, at present, no system is capable of a 100% dose reduction. However, to reduce PM 2.5 dosage by 74% is quite impressive and exceeds some of our standard “safety” precautions used every day. For example:
- Seat Belts: Seat belts helped reduce automobile fatalities by 45% to 50%.
- Airbags: When used in conjunction with seat belts, airbags reduce automobile fatalities by 61%.
- Body Armor: Law enforcement’s use of body armor has reduced the risk of fatalities; body armor has made it 3 to 4 times less likely a police officer will be killed in the line of duty.
- Vaccines: Annual vaccines have reduced the spread of the flu by 40% to 60%.

Improving Ventilation Effectiveness
Part of the Halo-P’s effectiveness stems from the use of a built-in fan and two-way diffuser. Similar to a ceiling fan, this allows the Halo-P to draw air into the center of the unit. It then filters the air through different layers of filtration before pushing the cleaned air through exhaust ports along the sides of the unit. Air then drifts downwards at low velocities. In doing this, the Halo-P is able to increase Ventilation Effectiveness (VEFF), ensuring proper room mixing.
In the same space used in the case study above, the Halo-P was able to demonstrate a 27% improvement when compared to the standard ventilation process.
Why is this important? Improved VEFF has many benefits. This includes a quicker removal of potential contaminants, as well as the minimization, if not elimination, of ‘dead spots’ that may cause occupants to feel discomfort and cause stagnation of air, which increases pollution load concentrations. Combining both the improved VEFF and adding HEPA H14 filtration, the Halo-P unit is highly effective in dose reduction and increasing indoor air quality.
