The United States is in the beginning phases of turning away from the average 50kw EV charger, according to a study done by the National Renewable Energy Laboratory. This shift means that EV chargers will be able to charge vehicles at a more accelerated rate than before.
The Department of Energy recently reported on the percentage of chargers in the U.S.
- 50% of DC chargers have a power level of 50kw and up
- 40% of DC chargers are 50kw or less
- 10% of DC chargers are 300kw and higher
This is a big shift from when a 40 to 50kw charger was considered the fast charger on the market. With that model of chargers, BEVs were able to charge to almost fully charged in a mere thirty minutes.
Some companies have already been in the works of increasing the power of their EV chargers and the battery power of their cars. Tesla has been coming out with superchargers as early as 2012. A few charger manufacturers’ most recent chargers dispense up to 350kw.
